When an officer is trying to gain control of a situation he typically will need to scale the amount of force used:<\/p>\n

  1. The officer can use his\u00a0presence<\/strong>\u00a0to try to stop a situation from happening<\/li>\n
  2. Next he can try to use\u00a0verbal commands<\/strong>\u00a0to stop an individual<\/li>\n
  3. He then can use his\u00a0body\u00a0<\/strong>to block punches or kicks, he may grab the individual<\/li>\n
  4. Use of a\u00a0less lethal weapon<\/strong>\u00a0such as a baton, taser, or dog can be used<\/li>\n
  5. Using a\u00a0lethal weapon<\/strong>\u00a0such as a firearm<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
